EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM

Extended Day

Most students would cringe, cry, and shutter with fear when faced with a school day that runs into the night. Most would buckle under the pressure brought upon by a twelve hour school day. Some might drown or get lost in the occasionally overwhelming sea of online learning. Then it's a good thing the Odyssey Extended Day program is not designed for most students.

From 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. a small number of students grace the school in the woods with their presence in a successful effort to earn a high school diploma. Extended Day is a program designed for high school students who are in need of recovering course credits. To meet their goals, these students utilize an online learning tool called PLATO. PLATO courses are online classes: courses completed on the computer via the Internet. These courses are self-paced learning endeavors designed to ensure the student’s mastery of subject material. Students receive 0.5 credits for every course completed. The self-paced nature of the program does not mean students are alone on the road to meet their goals. Extended Day is administered and supervised by a teacher and an aide to ensure that students are supported through their journey toward graduation.

Thanks to two generous grants received from the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, this program is available to 16 to 22 year old students who intend to earn a high school diploma in a more traditional setting after "normal" school hours. During the school year, the Odyssey Extended Day program runs from 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Extended Day will also run through the summer for added flexibility.
